  • Cytology

    • single cells or clusters (< 12 cells), numerous
    • cytoplasm: round, blue with clear halo
    • nucleus: round, can have binucleate, multinucleate, mitosis, vacuoles
    • single prominent nucleolus (can have multiple)
    • lacy skirt = outer rim vacuoles
    • window = narrow space separating adjacent cells
    • reactive changes can be prominent

  • Ddx

    • mesothelioma: clusters > 12 cells, bizzare atypia
    • metastasis: a distinct population different from the reactive mesos
