    • diarrhea, iron deficiency anemia (older adults)

  • Histology

    • location: proximal > distal small bowel, can be patchy
    • villus blunting, atrophy
    • intraepithelial lymphocytes (in tips of villi early stages)
    • enterocyte: cuboidal, loss of basal nuclear polarity, cytoplasmic vacuoles
    • other: crypt hyperplasia, thickened BM, reduced goblet cells, LP inflammation
